Around election time, I tend to remember a particular verse. This verse also comes to mind when a leader falls, fails, or falters. It is a verse we might have remembered and quoted in pleasant reminder, but today it has struck me deeper than it has before.
The passage: 1 Timothy 2:1-2
"First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in this way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior."
The reminder to pray for our government leaders is one we all know. But here are the words in this passage which cut deeper than before: "First of all...that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in this way."
There is an undignified and ungodly imbalance in the relation between complaint and prayer as it relates to our government leaders. My challenge is Before I complain about my leaders, I will question whether the amount of my complaining has matched the amount of my prayers.
