Lent: Day 6 (thanks)

On this, the 6th day of my celebration of Lent. I would like to thank a few things.

1. Decaf Tea
My daily schedule places me in a coffee shop at least once whether it be for writing or a meeting with a student. It has been fantastic watching all the baristas from shops I frequent react to my request for hot decaf tea. The tea has been fantastic to at least appease my need to drink SOMETHING.

2. B-Complex Vitamin
The headaches most people (including myself) expected have not been too severe. What HAS been a drastic surprise is the lethargy that comes with the refraining from coffee by a self-proclaimed addict. B-Complex is specifically designed for energy metabolism, and I have certainly appreciated its effects. Thanks!

3. Motrin
Just because they weren’t as much of a factor as I had suspected doesn’t mean that headaches AREN’T a factor at all.

Lent: Day 2

My usual coffee shop:

I turn down the barista’s suggestion. “The usual?”

She helps me survey the teas for a caffeine free option.

Conversation leads to mentioning why I am not and will not be getting my usual “coffee for here and a refill”.

The manager steps from the little office desk to the counter to enter the conversation.

“Did I just overhear that you’re giving up caffeine for Lent?”
“Yeah! It is true.”
“Good luck,” she says with a tinge of sarcasm.

As she walks away she says with a wry smile, “I gave up Catholicism!”

I walk away laughingly thinking,

“She thinks I’m Catholic.”

Lethargic Liturgy

Tomorrow begins Lent.

It is the forty-day period before Easter. This year it begins February 17. Lent is a chance and challenge to refocus your life, withdraw from usual practices, and draw closer to the heart of God.

I’d like to invite you to joining me in a prayerful and reflective Lent. Click this link to receive daily emails during Lent containing passages from Dr. Crabb’s new book to help you focus your thoughts and begin your own conversations with God. Emails will begin on February 17.

In hopes of true sacrifice and empathizing with my pregnant wife, I intend to give up coffee and caffeine for Lent. I don’t tell you that here as a cry for attention, but for a request of accountability.

Help challenge me through the lethargy and headaches that are soon to ensue.

Will you join me? What do you choose to give up?
