Thanks for your thoughts PC. I agree with you pretty much down the line. I think there has always been a line of demarcation between the lawkeepers & the gracelivers. It seems like this has been the case as i reflect on church history, and has been occurring now over old earth/young earth, literal vs symbolic creation, role of women in ministry, most of which Rachel has covered. I have a friend who is very politically involved. He sees the church overall being like Nazi germany, talking grace and peace while not seeking to make the govt do justice. He also says there is no forgiveness without repentance and cites various Biblical passages to support this. What thoughts come to mind in thinking how you would respond to him???

Perhaps there are a few reasons. I think it is far easier to focus on the faults and failures of every other person, because in doing so, I don't have to look at my own. I mean the most often quoted passage about judging says, "First remove the plank from your own eye. THEN you may see clearly to remove the speck from your neighbors."

I think if we first did the real dirty work of looking at the things we needed to change in our own lives, we would approach other people very differently. If my heart has TRULY been wrecked by the sins I have battled and continued to battle, and if that battle has wrecked me enough to really see how amazing God's grace, mercy, and ridiculous love actually is, I would approach people very differently.

So I would say that legalism is so rampant because grace is not amazing to them. I have heard it said that if your sin is great, your savior must be great. If your sin is small (or you act like it is), your savior must be small.

I personally need and believe in a GREAT savior. Legalists have a small savior.

PC- why do you think the *legalistic perfectionism* is so embedded in so much preaching and teaching?? I have been in the Church since very young, gone to Bible College and Seminary and overwhelmingly have heard both overtly and covertly God expects us to *get it right* and not fail. The whole subject of *walking the talk*, having moral integrity and walking in step with the Spirit just run like a pinball loose in my head. What are some more ways you ascertain we can break free from this way and actually incorporate grace??

I think God expects failure from us far more than we do, and if we would understand that we could find incredible grace. Yet we always live life without the understanding that failure is going to happen. We are going to mess it up!

A favorite poet of mine wrote, "Failing is not just for failures. It is for everyone. Failures just have more experience."

I can get behind that. Acceptance and respect can certainly be at the top of our list of desires, and that placement can create other things in effect; such as guilt and shame when do not receive the acceptance or respect we want or think we deserve.

I think a big cause is how certain biblical imperatives get distorted. We are told to have no anxiety or fear, to have faith and obey and not doubt, to repent and sin no more. These are just a few examples. Of course in practive no one has or can do all this. we internalize a thought/feeling though that God expects this from us and as long as we fall short, built and shame will stick like glue until somehow we attain the standard- whatever that might be!!!! I agree PC we need intensive instruction in how to accept grace as God intends it

Thanks for writing this, PC. Hiding out is something I want to rid in my life. But at the same time, I like pretending like everything's ok and that I'm not a sensitive, fragile person. I think it's easy to think God is like me...cruel and full of hate towards my wrongdoings. What a relief that He is not like me!

Any thoughts on how come guilt seems to be so prevalent in "Christian" circles?
